Reached the Trailhead around 8:30. There were 10 other cars. The restrooms are closed(Federal Shutdown I guess).
Today was a lovely day to hike, completely sunny with amazing view of Mt Index and the stevens pass range as you walk along the trail. Around 4 fallen trees, but nothing that cannot be easily crossed/crawled under.
The streams are flowing, especially near the 2 mile section where a waterfall crossed the trail, so waterproof boots will be of big help. We hit patches of snow only during the last 15 mins. But it was a nice weekend with lots of hikers, the snow has packed down into black ice and very slippery. Traction devices are very helpful, although you could reach the lake without them as well, just with a lot of slipping.
The lake is completely frozen over. We grabbed a bite on the lunch rock with amazing views of Mt Index above us. Even heard a loud thud followed by snow caving from the mountain side. Whoever popped confetti on the lunch rock lately, you left the lids of all the bottles lying around, not cool. Have cleaned them up for you, you're welcome :).
We passed a lot of groups while heading down. Got back to the parking lot around 12:30 and it was completely full. Get in early if you wish to have some time along by the lake. It's a lovely time to hike Lake Serene and see it in its frozen winter beauty look.
