Northwest Forest Pass

The aspen groves and golden larch are a sight to behold on this remote hike through a seldom-seen corner of the Colville National Forest.

From the trailhead at the south end of the campground at Silver Creek, follow the South Fork Silver Creek Trail through the deep, dark forest. Don’t believe the trailhead sign stating 3.8 miles to Gunsight Pass; the trail was rerouted in 1995, making the grade gentler—and at the same time longer. Initially an old roadbed, the newer trail crosses South Fork Silver Creek twice before it narrows to single track and leaves the creek behind as it ascends Windy Ridge.

Approximately 6 miles into the hike, there is an optional spur trail that leads about 0.25 mile to a scenic overlook of the Silver Creek drainage below and toward nearby Sherlock Mountain. This is the best vantage point to absorb the full array of fall color on the surrounding slopes.

After drinking in the scenery, continue approximately 1 mile to the end of the trail at Gunsight Pass, between Sherlock Mountain and Mount Linton. The adventurous may wish to try the off-trail route to the summit of Mount Linton, described in 50 Hikes: Eastern Washington’s Highest Mountains (#45). Be sure to carry a map and compass with you. Otherwise, retrace the route to return to the trailhead in the valley far below.

Hike More: Take advantage of the great trail head campground at road’s end and hike the North Fork Silver Creek Trail the next day.
