Northwest Forest Pass

Climb on an old sheep driveway. It's a steep trek past a junction with the County Line Trail to meadows, where the faint, sometimes invisible trail can be followed up to a 6200-foot pass.

The trail begins in a flat area, but soon starts up alongside the creek. The tread is rocky and rough, but easy to follow. At about 2 miles (4700 feet) is a junction with the County Line Trail, which winds it way up to a saddle southeast of Scatter Peak.

About a quarter mile farther is the crossing of Scatter Creek, the location of which should be carefully noted for the return trip.

After the creek crossing, the trail can be hard to find and disappears in the meadows that lead up to Scatter Creek Pass (aka Fish Eagle Pass).

Getting There

From the start of the gravel road at Salmon La Sac (FS4330), signed "Tucquala Lake" and others, drive 9 miles to about 0.2 miles before (south) of where Scatter Creek crosses over the road, and just north of a small, usually dry concrete-lined wash.

There is a small trailhead sign on the east side of the road ("S Scatter Creek #1328"). The Forest Service seems to have lost interest in maintaining this road so expect to drive slowly. There is a separate trail ("N Scatter Creek #1328.1") on the north side of the creek.
